Meditation and Relaxation

Meditation is the practice of extreme concentration upon a single thought or awareness. It’s has been practiced in the Eastern religions for over five thousand years. The Western civilization has begun to realize the positive energies that can come from the practice of meditation. It combines the spiritual being with the mental to quiet the mind and learn focus.

Martial arts employ methods of meditation in their teachings. They teach one to clear the mind and focus solely on the act or presence in front of you. In addition to martial arts; other spiritual movements such as Yoga and New Age movements utilize meditation as a way of finding that inner enlightenment.

There are two types of meditation, one is called mindfulness. This calls for focus on background perception and experience. The other is concentrative meditation, which emphasizes focus on a pre-selected object. Some shift between the two. The goal is to reach an altered state of consciousness in order to achieve better mental or physical health, spiritual enlightenment or to enhance physical health.

There are many ways to practice meditation. Some chant a phrase or repetitive word over and over until everything else disappears from their mind and they reach a state of mental spirituality. Fasting and prayer have long been used alongside meditation also.
The whole purpose of meditation is an attempt to bring us inward where we can really see who we are beyond the physical being and habits. Meditation is all about stillness and silence so that we can truly observe without prejudice.

In today’s world, we see and experience a lot of anger and rage in individuals and it makes us wonder if we have become so entrenched in the physical world that we have lost touch with our inner peace. Meditation teaches discipline. One has to learn to train the mind to stay focused and forget about problems and annoyances.

Posture is important in meditation. There are many different poses that are believed to be important but the most notable would be the cross-legged sitting pose. Many meditation methods teach that the spine should be kept straight during meditation. The reason for this is that it’s considered to encourage the movement of spiritual energy through our bodies. Instead of the cross-legged position, some consider sitting straight in a chair with feet flat on the floor to be as effective. Quietness or repetitive activities are desirable methods to achieve that meditative trance.
People have reported to have gained a greater understanding of a religion or belief system through the use of meditation. Other results from meditation include; feelings of calmness and peace, increased patience or compassion of others, heightened senses and even remembering long buried memories.
