Aromatherapy for Children

When you think of aromatherapy, you automatically think of women using it. However, men and children can also benefit from the aromas of the oils, children just need smaller doses. There are also some oils that should never be used with children so make sure you know what you are doing before you try aromatherapy with your child.

Good Oils for Children

The oils that are suitable for children include:

• Sweet Orange

This really is a great oil as it is one of the safer and inexpensive oils to buy. Orange in color, it has a strong sweet smell which really does resemble orange peel. Usually used to aid constipation, stress and colds, it may be good if your child is ill. Simply find a bath recipe for the oil and it really could benefit your child.

• Lavender

Lavender is a great oil and is one of the most common around on the market. This is particularly good for children who find it hard to sleep. A single drop on their pillow can really send them off to a deep sleep.

Lavender is a clear liquid with a yellow tint to it, and it has a really strong aroma. It is one of the most powerful essential oils and so it should always be diluted down before putting it anywhere near your child. It is often used to help with stress but it can also be good for anxiety, acne and asthma.

Overall Lavender has quite a lot of benefits and it can be used for many medical problems.

• Roman Chamomile

Roman Chamomile is a great oil for children and it really can soothe the skin. It is often sued for nausea, allergies, earache and inflamed skin. It is great to add to a bath, though again, it should be diluted!

Roman Chamomile is a very pale blue/grey color, and it has a sweet, fruity scent to it.

• Tea Tree

Tea Tree oil is often associated with older children and it is known to help clear the skin of any blemishes. However, if added to a bath, it can really help children who have colds and flu, athlete’s foot, and insect bites. It is known for its soothing and cleansing properties.

Tea Tree oil is a clear color with a yellow tint to it and it has a medium-strong, medicinal, scent.

The main thing to remember with any oils is that they should always be diluted. This is true for adults as well as for children; however, children need the oils diluted more than adults. Also, children should never be left alone with the oils as some have really sweet smells, and some children think that it is safe to drink them. Essential oils should never be taken internally, so never allow your child to drink the oil.

It is always better to consult a professional practitioner before you use any oils with your children. Aromatherapy does have a lot of benefits for children. It can help soothe colds, flu and even tummy pains. So all you need is to research as much as you possibly can, before you can safely use aromatherapy on your child.
