Starting an Aromatherapy Garden

As the snow fades from our yards and the birds start chirping, a feeling of relief strikes us: spring is here. As you start pondering what you will do in your garden this year, think about peace and tranquility. Colors, values, scents--and aromatherapy, which will provide you with a beautiful surprise.

If you’ve already selected the flowers and foliage you wish to plant, consider adding some special touches which will bring an aromatic delight to your home garden this Spring.

Many gardens are displayed based on coloration and plant size. The gardeners find that targeting and accessorizing colors adds a breathtaking touch that defines beauty and nature. Planting a tiny little plant in the early Spring, makes a gardener feel as though they’ve nurtured life. In the Summer months, this is confirmed as flowers and plants bloom and grow wild, providing many hours of scent and enjoyment.

To add an abundance of aromatherapy to your colourful garden, here is a listing of aromatic plants that will enhance your pleasure:

Basil
The flavor of summer. This aroma created by this popular herb adds an exquisite flavor to your cooking. Many basils grow attractive green leaves; others have curious purple hues. The aroma is so pleasing to the nose and the flavor is insatiable. Add a few leaves of basil to your summer salads or pasta sauce. When summer is over, pick all leaves and freeze them in a container for the winter months

Fennel
Known to invite proactive insect varieties to protect and nurture your garden, this herb offers a delicious liquorice scent. Very sweet, but oh so pleasing to the senses.

Lavender
The beautiful scent of summer is always upon you if you add Lavender to your garden. This plant comes in several varieties, each different in their own way.

Thyme
Thyme is an herb that has made its way into many gardens for years. The creeping variety looks best planted in a ‘wild’ garden. Adds several climbers, wild rose varieties, and you’ll have a beautiful scented garden.

It’s important that you read the requirements for each individual aromatic plant. The needs for one plant may not coincide with the needs of another. Take into consideration the amount of light and water required for each plant. Place them into locations according to their requirements. On very hot summer days provide ample water for your plants and watch them flourish, providing aromatic scent throughout the seasons.
