Essential Oils To Be Used With Caution

Aromatherapy can be a very helpful science, but don't let yourself get hoodwinked into buying dangerous oils that should only be used by a qualified aromatherapy specialist . Some of these potentially dangerous oils are listed below.

Mugwort, or Artemisia vulgaris, has been used for its medicinal properties since ancient times. However, whilst in small doses given by qualified experts it can be used to kill fatigue, the amateur aromatherapy devotee should beware of using it, because it contains thujone, which is poisonous. Because it has also been known to cause contractions, it should be particularly avoided by pregnant women.

Artemisia absinthium, more commonly known as wormwood, should also be avoided. This is a very pungent essential oil, and actually contains various neurotoxins that have been known to bring on attacks of epilepsy and seizures. So try to stay away from this one completely if you are even a little bit prone to epileptic attacks.

Wintergreen, botanically known as gaultheria procumbens, should also be avoided by home aromatherapy users. The natural oil can be dangerous and highly toxic if you do not know how to use it properly. In expert hands, however, it can provide welcome relief from complaints like arthritis, lumbago, inflammation, muscle stiffness, and any general pain at the joints. There is a synthetic alternative to wintergreen oil that is supposed to provide the same benefits without any of the toxins, but some aromatherapists don't recommend this man-made alternative.

Sassafras, or what is known to the scientific world as sassafras albidum, is used by some in aromatherapy, but is generally avoided. This oil is not only extremely toxic, it is also carcinogenic, which means that it can cause cancer. Even a small quantity of this pungent oil can be lethal, so this is definitely one you want to stay away from.

The salvias, or sage family are very helpful in relieving headaches, asthma, and muscle pain, should be avoided by all people with high blood pressure.

In addition, many of the oils that are normally helpful and soothing should be avoided by pregnant women, as they can pose a danger to both the mother and the child. The bottom line is that you should always check up the specific suggestions and guidelines for the usage of the particular oil that you are planning on using. Also, bear in mind that these are just a few of the many potentially toxic essential oils. It's always better to be safe than sorry, even if it takes a little more time and effort.
